Slavsk

Slawsk (Russian Славск; until 1946 German Heinrichswalde, Lithuanian Gastos ) is a small town in the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast, established a Rajonsverwaltung ( Rajon Slawsk ) and the urban community Slawskoje gorodskoje posselenije ( Славское городское поселение ). The town has 4614 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). The present name Slawsk derives from the Russian word Slava (Glory ) from, freely translated glorious city.

Geography

The town is the center of the region Elchniederung - a bog region at the Curonian Lagoon. It is located 15 kilometers southwest of Sowjetsk (formerly Tilsit ) and the border with Lithuania.

History

The place is known since 1292. 1657 got him Ehrentreich Heinrich of Halle (hence the local name) is the Great Elector. Economy and Transport

Church building

The Evangelical Lutheran Church Heinrichswalde at ul Sovetskaya was built 1867-1869 with hochaufragendem and correspondingly far into the country peering tower in the Gothic Revival style. The previous building, a half-timbered church, was from 1686 to 1694. Carved out of the old church was taken over into the new. The entire interior of the church was in 1945 and then destroyed, the building itself was in decline. Heinrichswalde was until 1944 a parish with 30 affiliated locations.
