Slite

Slite is a place ( tätort ) on the Swedish island of Gotland in the province of Gotland County and the historical province of Gotland.

Geography

The third largest city on the island is located on the east coast, about 35 km northeast of Visby, the main town of the island, in the municipality of Gotland. It is the economic center of Northeast Gotland and is dominated by the cement industry.

History

From 1963 until the formation of the Municipality of Gotland in 1971, the place had the status of a market town ( swedish köping ). Slite has long been a center of commerce; Today, tourism is an important source of income, but also the industry with the extraction of stone, gravel and cement production. Here is one of the largest cement plants in northern Europe, which is operated by Cementa, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement.

The Church

The Church of Slite is one of three on Gotland, belonging to the Swedish state church and were built after the Middle Ages from scratch, thus does not belong to the Gotland country churches. It was built in 1959-60 by the architect Holger Jensen, from funds of the Foundation Church of Slite. The form is modem and without attachment to Gotland traditions. It includes a church hall with 200 seats, a sacristy and a connection with this wooden belfry with an attached large wooden cross. The church receives a special character through the large hipped roof, the inside is open to the roof ridge. The low walls are glazed for the most part. A clear view of the ocean replaces the traditional altarpiece. The cross of triumph has been sculpted by Bertil Nyström. The organ was installed in 1961.

Attractions

The museum courtyard Vike ( swedish Vike minnesgård ) is a Gotland beach farm, on the fields and buildings are intact and an old herb garden and a hop garden ( " Humlegarden " ) exists. It is located near the beach on the east coast south of Slite at the Tjalderbucht. About three kilometers west of Slite are beyond the Bogeviken also the water mill of Aner and the Church of Boge.
