Gotland Municipality

Gotland is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Gotland County and the historical province of Gotland. So that you cover the entire Baltic Sea island of Gotland, but also neighboring islands, especially Fårö. The main town of the municipality is Visby.

The municipality of Gotland was formed in 1971 by merging the borough Visby, the market town of Slite and 12 rural communities. It is the only municipality in Sweden, does not belong to the county council, but is itself carrying out the duties of the Provincial Parliament. The community is called since 1 January 2011 Region Gotland.

Economy

Gotland is a traditional agricultural region where livestock (about ¾ of agricultural income) dominates. About four times as many people as the national average to work in agriculture. In contrast, Gotland is an industry weak area. On Gotland, there are only 11 industries with more than 50 employees. The capital goods industry and the food industry are the predominant industries. The service sector has doubled in the last decades. In addition to the public sector, tourism plays an important role.
