Roma (Gotland)

Roma or Roma monastery is a place (Swedish tätort ) on the Swedish Baltic Sea island of Gotland in the province of Gotland County and the historical province of Gotland.

It is located about 18 km south-east from Visby, approximately in the middle of the island which also forms the municipality of Gotland. The Church of Rome is located in the neighboring town of Lövsta or Roma kyrkby, 2 km north-west. Roma is one of approximately equal parts of the parishes ( swedish socks ) Roma and Björke ( with the Church of Björke ) to.

Importance had Roma both as Thing for the Central Gotland, and later as the site of the Roma monastery, which is located in 1164 by Cistercian monks gegründetm about midway between Roma and Lövsta. Later it was an important railway junction.

The 1997 established local sugar factory was one of the largest industrial companies in the island.

To avoid confusion with the Italian name of Rome, used Romakloster for the mailing address. This name also appears in the data of Statistiska Centralbyrån.
