One of the first multi-party elections in Slovenia on April 8, 1990, the SDZS formed with other opposition parties - the Slovenian Democratic Confederation ( Slovenska demokratična zveza SDZ ), the Slovene Christian Democrats ( Slovenski krščanski democratic SKD), the Slovenian Farmers' Federation ( Slovenska kmečka zveza ), the Slovenian artisan Party ( Slovenska Obrtniška stranka ) and the Greens of Slovenia ( Slovenije Zeleni ) the DEMOS coalition, which won the elections with 52 % of the vote and the Christian Democrats Lojze Peterle formed a government.

1992, the SDZS renamed in Social Democratic Party of Slovenia ( Slovenije Socialdemokratska stranka SDSS). At the Third Party Congress in May 1993, Janez Janša, was chairman of the party re-elected on the party conferences in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2005.

Many of today's members of the SDS are from the Slovenian Democratic Confederation ( Slovenska demokratična zveza SDZ ) and the Slovenian Social Democratic Federation ( Socialdemokratska zveza Slovenije SDZS ).

In 2000, the SDS formed an alliance with the party New Slovenia. In 2004 it was renamed the Slovenian Democratic Party.

On 3 October 2004, the SDS was obtained during the Slovenian parliamentary elections 29.1 % of the votes and thus became the strongest force in the national parliament. Since then, she worked with the Prime Minister of Slovenia Janez Janša.

In the parliamentary elections on 21 September 2008, the SDS reached 29.3%; due to losses of their former coalition partners, they may represent no more government.

In early parliamentary elections on 4 December 2011, the SDS was second strongest political force after the newly founded party Pozitivna Slovenija. After negotiations with four smaller parties, the SDS formed a center-right coalition; Janez Janša was elected on January 28, 2012 as the successor Borut Pahor as the new Prime Minister of Slovenia.
