Slovenian wine

The viticulture in Slovenia has made very rapidly independently after the collapse of Yugoslavia. Today, Slovenia is one of the most prosperous wine growing regions of Eastern Europe.

Varieties

Due to the high wine consumption in Slovenia even a majority of production has only the status of table wine. From this mass is an ever-growing amount of producers of quality wines Western European level emphasizes. An ever increasing number of wineries are able to compete in an international comparison already, so not only achieve the berries and Trockenbeerenauslese from the area around Jeruzalem, international medals but vintners from all over Slovenia.

Wine-growing areas

The total area covers about 24,200 ha of Slovenia, the annual production of 1 million hectoliters, of which 25% red and 75% white wine.

Slovenia is divided into three wine regions:

  • The Drau valley ( Podravje )
  • The Adriatic Littoral ( Primorska )
  • The Save valley ( Posavje )

Drau ( Podravje )

For this growing area are predominantly white wines, the most common varieties are Furmint and Riesling. Other varieties are Riesling, Traminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The wines from the Drau are semi-dry or sweet traditionally.

Adriatic Coast Country ( Primorska )

The hills of Brda, Vipava, Kras and Koper are the extension of the Friuli Collio and Carso growing areas. Here Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, rebula Malvasia and excellent quality are produced. But red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are fermented strengthened. The traditional red wine of Slovenia is the acid-rich Teran from Refosco grapes.

Save valley ( Posavje )

This area lies in the south of Slovenia, on the border with Croatia. In the Save valley mainly simple table wines are produced.
