Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Socijaldemokratska partija of Bosnia and Herzegovina (SDP, Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina) is a multi-ethnic political party in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is committed to strengthening the state institutions.

Chairman of the party is Zlatko Lagumdžija. The party is a full member of the Socialist International.

The party sees itself as a successor to the first Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was founded in 1909 by a union and left-wing intellectuals. She changed her name several times, and after 1945 was part of the Communist and Socialist Party of Bosnia - Herzegovina and Yugoslavia. In 1992, she was briefly involved in the " Government of National Unity ". She left the government, as the HDZ and the SDA supported the establishment of national armies.

At the general election in November 2000, the SDP became the strongest party in the country with 21.5 percent of the vote and 9 seats in the parliament of the state as a whole. 2002, it came to significant loss of votes to intra-party conflicts, according to which some former members founded a new party.

In October 2006, the SDP achieved in the choice of the overall Parliament with 11.9 percent of the vote 5 seats ( 1). For uproar among the Croatian population their choice of candidates Željko Komšić made ​​in the three-member state presidency. Komšić won with 39.6 % of Croatian voices clearly against the candidate of " Croatian Democratic Union " (HDZ ), Ivo Miro Jovic ( 26.1 %). According to their view Komšić was chosen mainly by Bosniaks. He therefore did not represent the Croatian people in Bosnia - Herzegovina, which is why the HDZ choice Komšićs regarded as illegitimate.

In the elections on 3 October 2010, the party received the most votes, almost twice as many as in 2006. Željko Komšić your presidential candidate drew back as Croatian candidate in the presidential one. He received 200,000 votes more than his first election to the state presidency four years earlier.
