Sophie of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Kulmbach

Sophie of Brandenburg- Ansbach (* March 10, 1485 in Ansbach, † May 24 1537 in Legnica ) was a Princess of Brandenburg -Ansbach and was by marriage Duchess of Legnica.

Life

Sophie was a daughter of Margrave Friedrich the Elder of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Bayreuth (1460-1536) from his marriage to Sophia of Poland (1464-1512), daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland.

They married on November 24, 1518 the Silesian Duke Frederick II of Liegnitz ( 1480-1547 ). This was built by the Piast Castle in Legnica beginning of the 16th century; Renaissance portal at the main entrance adorn chest images of Sophie and Friedrich. The couple is also shown in a window of the Church of Our Lady to Legnica.

Sophie is not to be confused with her niece of the same name (1535-1587), which was also the Duchess of Legnica.
