Southport, Queensland

Southport is a town on the coast of Queensland, Australia, with 24,097 inhabitants. The name comes from the fact that the city had the southernmost port of the colony of Queensland. Administratively, it is part of the United Gold Coast, which is 1958 arose from the merger of several neighboring communities. Southport thereby represents the business district of the Gold Coast, while the tourist centers that have previously also concentrated here, are largely migrated to other parts of the city.

Southport was formerly a center for wood processing. In 1898 the city received a railroad connection, the Southport association with Brisbane. The town's development was funded by the construction of the Jubilee Bridge to Main Beach. Especially since the end of World War II, the town grew to become a popular vacation spot.
