Barcelona -El Prat

Spanair S. A. was a Spanish airline based in L' Hospitalet de Llobregat and base at the airport Barcelona -El Prat as well as a member of the airline alliance Star Alliance. She has end of January 2012 ceased flight operations in and went into bankruptcy.

History

Spanair was founded in December 1986 and led in March 1988 with their first flights, first as pure charter airline through. From 1994 also regular scheduled flights were offered.

Between November 1997 and March 2002 Spanair offered on intercontinental scheduled flights to Latin America and the U.S., which were carried out with Boeing 767 -300ER and led, among other things, to Rio de Janeiro and Havana. Since 2002, long-range, however, were no longer run by Spanair itself, but only in code-sharing by other airlines.

Since April 2003, Spanair member of the international airline alliance Star Alliance, is one of the example, Lufthansa and Thai Airways. In May 2003, Spanair has received the security certificate IOSA IATA, which was renewed three times since then, for the first time.

In June and September 2007, extended the Spanair fleet to a total of four Boeing 717-200, which were in turn submitted to Blue1 spring 2011. In November of the same year a lounge opened at Madrid -Barajas airport.

On 16 July 2008, the line announced a radical austerity program. Because of the growing competition, but mainly because of rising fuel prices, Spanair 1100 has reduced from 3800 points and nine routes deleted from the flight plan.

On 31 January 2009, it was announced that the SAS Group sold 80.1 % stake in a consortium. The SAS Group continued to hold a minority stake of 19.9%. A purchase price of a symbolic price of one euro was agreed. The SAS also assumed the debt of almost € 500 million. In addition to the regional government of Catalonia and the city of Barcelona to the buyer consortium comprises also several private investors. In May 2009, Spanair moved together with other companies, the new Terminal 1 at Barcelona airport and opened its third lounge there.

In December 2011, Qatar Airways announced its intention to acquire a 49% stake in Spanair for 116 million euros. In the same year, the previous frequent flyer program Spanair Plus has been replaced by SpanairStar.

On January 27, 2012 Spanair flight operations presented a short term after earlier negotiations on financial investment with Qatar Airways and the Catalan government had failed. Three days later, Spanair finally applied for insolvency.

Destinations

Spanair operated numerous destinations within Spain such as Alicante, Granada, Madrid, Seville and Valencia and flew beyond some destinations in Europe and North Africa, including Stockholm and Algiers. In German-speaking Spanair operated in winter 2011 Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich.

Code Sharing

Furthermore entertained Spanair codeshare agreements with several other airlines, including Air Comet and since January 2010, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Egyptair and Turkish Airlines.

On August 20, 2008 accident on the Madrid-Barajas Airport, the McDonnell Douglas MD -82 aircraft registration mark EC- HFP on Spanair flight 5022nd The machine with the aim of Gran Canaria crashed shortly after taking off from Runway 36L due to a malfunction of the buoyancy aids from a height of 40 feet (12 m) down, crashed and burst into flames. 154 of 172 people on board were killed.
