Spassk, Penza Oblast

Spassk (Russian Спасск ) is a small town in Penza Oblast (Russia) with 7442 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the western edge of the Volga plate about 160 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Pensa on the river Studenets in the river system of the Volga.

Spassk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

By Spassk leads the M5 highway Moscow - Samara Chelyabinsk.

History

The town originated in the 17th century as Bogdanowo and was later, according to his church in Spasskoye renamed (of Russian spas for Redeemer ). 1779 was the place the municipal law under the present name (also Spassk -na- Studenze, ie Spassk on Studenets to distinguish it from other places of the same name ).

1925, the city was renamed in Bednodemjanowsk, in honor of the proletarian poet Demyan Bedny ( 1883-1945, actually Yefim Alekseyevich Pridworow ). In 2005, the city got its old name back.

Culture and sights

In Spassk the Assumption Church ( Церковь Вознесения / Tserkov Wosnessenija ) is obtained from 1859, along with other buildings from the 19th and early 20th century as those of the nobility clubs, elementary school, the district police administration and a guest house. In the nearby village Abaschewo is a museum of toys there traditionally produced.

In Spassk there are companies in the food industry as well as for artistic ceramics.
