Belinsky (town)

Belinsky (Russian Белинский until 1948 Tschembar / Чембар ) is a small town in Penza Oblast (Russia) with 8565 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the western edge of the Volga plate about 130 km west of the Oblasthauptstadt Penza at the union of the river and Little Big Tschembar Tschembar to Tschembar in the river system of the Don.

Belinsky is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1713, as here was a fort in place of the existing village Dmitrijewskoje or Maly Tschembar. 1780 was the place under the name Tschembar - after the river - the municipal law.

In 1948 it was renamed after the literary critic Vissarion Belinsky and philosopher, who spent his youth here.

Culture and sights

In Belinski a number of buildings dating from the 19th century is obtained, the building of the City Duma, the Semstwoverwaltung and the boy educational institution.

In addition to the local museum there is in the former home of the family and the educational institution a Belinski Museum.

17 km northeast of the city lies with the present village Lermontowo the former estate of J. Tarchany Arsenjewa, the grandmother of the poet Mikhail Lermontov, where it spent his youth and began to write.
