Summer Drehwurz ( Spiranthes aestivalis )
The summer Drehwurz ( Spiranthes aestivalis ), also called Sommerwendelorchis or Sommerwendelähre, is a species of the genus of the rotation Wurzen ( Spiranthes ) in the family of the Orchid Family ( Orchidaceae). She is one of the rarest native orchid species.
Description
The summer Drehwurz is a delicate, deciduous, perennial, herbaceous growing Speicherwurzelgeophyt with two to six fleshy storage roots that develop a length of 5 to 8 centimeters. From three to five rosette leaves a 10 to 35 centimeters high stalk grows.
The three to six basal leaves are bright green, linear- lanceolate, 5-14 cm long, 0.6 to 1.2 centimeters wide, rinnig and upright. The inflorescence is 3-10 inches long and twisted like a corkscrew with 6 to 20 loosely arranged white flowers.
The bloom time is early July to late August, with the main flowering period extends from late July to early August.
Dissemination
The distribution area extends across central and southern Europe. In the north there are reserves in the Netherlands and in southern England. The southernmost occurrence rich to Morocco.
Location
The summer Drehwurz growing in nutrient-poor fens and bogs intermediate, preferably on wet calcareous tufa in swamp humus or plant communities of small harrows Moore ( order: Caricetalia davallianae ) up to an altitude of 1800 m. Typical companion plants are the Auburn head Ried ( Schoenus ferrugineus ) and the black head Ried ( Schoenus nigricans )
Nature protection and hazard
Like all orchid species occurring in Europe is also the summer Drehwurz under the strictest protection of European and national laws.
In Germany outside Bavaria only a few occurrences in Baden- Württemberg.
Spiranthes aestivalis is threatened with extinction. The sources of risk are to be sought primarily in the loss of their habitat due to the cultivation of peatlands and in dereliction of fresh and wet meadows.
