It was then re-released in 2003 as a double CD with the following album Danse Manatee (2001) on FatCat Records. There is also available on vinyl.

Genesis

All songs were between 1997 and 1999 by Avey Tare (real name: David Portner ) written - except for " Penny Dreadfuls ", which he wrote at the age of 16 years. Portner and Panda Bear (actually Noah Lennox ) took the acoustic guitar and the drums live on a Tascam 48 1/2 " 8-track recorder in Portner 's bedroom in Baltimore during the summer of 1999. The piano pieces along with the overdubs were in the bedroom of Portner 's parents received. Portner wanted for the guitar a " nagging and jarring sound to an uneasy feeling " to create.

An old Roland SH-2 synthesizer, the brother of the later Animal Collective Band Member, Geologist ( Brian Weitz actually ) took place in a camp, was used for the bass sounds. The drums were played with jazz brush, so the album remind you of other albums like Ocean Rain by Echo & the Bunnymen or " Forever Changes " by Love. Avey Tare would dictate the drum pattern by beatboxing. Other sounds, so the majority of "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" were produced by looped feedback.

Artwork

The original album cover was found by Avey, who thought it would fit nicely to the album. The album was supposed to Tare 's name appear only under Avey, but he was impressed by Panda Bear's drum work so that he also sat pandas name on the cover. The method, simple to put the band members, who each played their cover - instead of the project name Animal Collective - remained until the album Campfire Songs ( 2003).

With the original release on Animal Records, a self-deprecating text in the albums booklet found with the following history

" Not long ago by a young fellow named Triffen Avey Tare Panda Bear and his friend the patchwork ( some call it Forest), which covers the land. They were observed by Pan and had been brought up by fairies and angels of light, which played deep in the woods. "Let's make the music of childhood ," cried Avey one day when the two played. Panda thought this idea was a good one. "I can [also Drumsticks ] use my magical Rhythm horse mackerel and you can take your sun harp playing ," he said. Thus began the two to create melodies and rhythms Panda brought from every direction, while Avey singing. All songs were over wooden toys and invisible friends, and were filled with the light of the forest. This is the first collection of songs that they played. "

Reception

Brent S. Sirota awards 8.9 / 10.0 points on the album and wrote on 1 August 2000 at Pitchfork Media:

" " Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished " is not only unique, but also one of the most original albums out there. This album married the beautiful and the Violent and is not for the timid ears: the glitzy pop away never too far from ripping noise. The lyrics are mostly unintelligible, but now and then you can hear wonderful phrases and language gems from the dazzling music shimmer. "

In the allmusic album received 4/5 stars. It writes the critic Francois Couture:

"Quick Living Avant- Pop, which surprised, but always remains catchy. You could too weird for your taste normal hold or normal for your strange taste. But then you could also find the best of both worlds. "
