When the Upper Moelltal was originally settled, can not be determined exactly. Today's Upper Carinthia and East Tyrol were settled around 1200 BC by the Illyrians, from about 400 BC Celts migrated from the north and one coming founded around 200 BC, the kingdom of Noricum. From this period such as the names " Tauern " for the massif and " Möll " for the longest river in all Tauern valleys. In the era of the Romans, who had incorporated around 50 AD the Noricum into their realm, arose over the Tauern crest and a leading Heiligenblut to Salzburg Road.

With the migration of peoples in the 5th and 6th centuries, in Noricum were the state order, and with it probably the majority of the settlements in the Upper Moelltal basis. End of the 6th century, Slavs began to settle, which was reflected in a series of landscape and place names with endings - itz, - ah, - ig or - nig. From 740 Christian missionaries from Bavaria came to Carinthia, clergy from Freising founded in the 8th century, the parish barn, were formed from the starting in the course of time other parishes in the region. Many Bavarian settlers moved to the 10th century and created in Moelltal by clearing another settlement area.

When exactly the parish barn has emerged is not occupied; in the year 957 a church was mentioned in records in the stable. Originally belonging to the diocese of Freising, she came as a fief or exchange to the counts of Lurn and after their extinction joined the parish in 1149 in the possession of the Archbishopric Salzburg, followed until 1803 should not change. A Ministerialengeschlecht built in the 12th or 13th century a castle or a fixed tower in or near the village. Stable until 1848 was the seat of a land register office, and the seat of a 1318 court first mentioned (castle keep).

The name of the stall is interpreted by Sage so that after a landslide from the former place Wildegg only one stall was left, and in fact the area was frequently affected by severe storms and mudslides. However, go places with " stable " in the name very often on a high medieval " curtis stabularia " back to what is to be interpreted as a stately manor in the sense of official court and in this case probably also true.

With the formation of local churches in 1850 was constituted the community stable, at its municipal area except for minor boundary adjustments since then nothing has changed.
