History

Stavnebanen was built during World War II at the request of the German Wehrmacht as an alternative route outside the center of Trondheim, to the case of sabotage to have an alternative route. Because the tunnel was long, parallel path from Skansen station was built by the Sandgata. When the war was over, neither of the two sections was completed. The distance from the Sandgate and continue through the gate Olav Tryggvasons was only enough to Sondre gate.

The ongoing construction has been postponed long the line was put into operation on June 2, 1957. At first it was used only for freight. Since 1988 ride on the track every day the local trains from Steinkjer, leaving the Dovrebahn in Marie Borg until after Lerkendal. By Tyholttunnelen operate as before only freight trains.

For local trains railcar NSB Series 92 ( 2012) of the NSB used. Trains run from one to two hours every hour depending on traffic.
