History
Until 31 December 2004 the Municipality Steimbke belonged to the former government district of Hannover, which was dissolved as all other Lower Saxony government districts.

The Samtgemeinderat consists of 20 elected members as well as the directly elected mayor Samtgemeinde. Since the local elections on 11 September 2011, it is composed as follows:
- CDU 9 seats
- WG SG Steimbke 6 seats
- SPD 4 seats
- GREEN 1 seat
Samtgemeinde Mayor
Mayor of the velvet municipality since 1 November 2001, Hans -Jürgen Hoffmann, who was elected in the election on September 9, 2001 with 61.5 % of votes. Hoffman ran as independent candidates for election, there were two rival candidates. In the election on September 10, 2006 Hans -Jürgen Hoffmann was elected for a further term bs October 31, 2014 in his office with 66.6 %. There was an opposing candidate.
