Through a systematic clearing of forests, the first section is identical to a large extent with today's lower peasantry emerged. The resulting Hagen hooves settlement shows to this day for the typical settlement structure. Each settler received an equally large piece of land, a eingehägte, ie fenced hooves ( a Rodungshufe = 60-70 morning), the strip- shaped transverse extended to the street and within which he settled with his buildings. Rodewald developed in three farming communities that made up to 1974 individual communities.

Over the centuries an increasing settlement activity, associated with a greater continuous development on both sides of the road ( L 192 ) has developed only at the village ends and in the middle of the local situation. Only after the Second World War, there was an increased settlement activity in which the free surfaces were built along the main road, so that the characteristic of mutual development along the road to recognize only limited. In order not to destroy the impression of the original Hagen hooves village, two new development areas in the more densely populated town center and a commercial area have been designated at the southern end of the town in recent years.
