Susan Fitzgerald

Susan Fitzgerald ( born May 28, 1949 in Leicester, England as Susan Mary Theresa Fitzgerald, † September 9, 2013 in Dublin) was an Irish actress with character roles in film, television and theater. She became internationally known mainly for her roles in the feature films A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, The Serpent's Kiss, Angela's Ashes or Two Weddings and a love case.

Life

Susan Fitzgerald was born in 1949 as one of six children in Leicester, England, after her family had moved for work reasons from Dublin there when her father had qualified for a job as a doctor. Later the family returned to the Irish capital. Susan discovered her early love of theater. At age nine, she appeared for the first time with in a school play. After school, she studied at Trinity College in Dublin before her artistic career and her long association with the Gate Theatre began in the 1970s.

She played leading roles in plays by Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Noël Coward, Henrik Ibsen, Samuel Beckett, Alan Ayckbourn, Tennessee Williams, George William Russell, Frank McGuinness and Brian Friel, as well as in theater adaptations based on novels by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen.

In 1977 she was also her screen debut in the British cinema. In the film adaptation of James Joyce's novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by director Joseph Strick she played in a supporting role the character of Emma. A year later, Susan Fitzgerald also turned to the British television.

They were seen at the cinema in 1997 director Philippe Rousselot's The Serpent's Kiss in the ensemble of actors to Ewan McGregor, Greta Scacchi, Pete Postlethwaite and Richard E. Grant. In 1999, she starred in Alan Parker's award-winning drama Angela's Ashes. In 2009 she had her last screen appearance in Stephen Burke's Irish comedy Two Weddings and a love case.

In her career as an actress, she also participated in a variety of other projects in Ireland, among others, she also appeared in several plays at the Olympia Theatre.

Susan Fitzgerald was the wife of the director Michael Colgan, the artistic director of the Gate Theatres. The couple had three children: Sarah, Sophie and Richard. To Susan Fitzgerald relatives of the playwright Dennis Johnson and the Oscar - nominated actress Geraldine Fitzgerald are to be counted.

She died after a long illness on September 9, 2013 at the age of 64 years in Dublin.
