Talbingo, New South Wales

Talbingo is a small community in New South Wales, Australia, located at the end of the Snowy Mountains on the Snowy Mountains Highway. The place is located 451 km from Sydney and is located 410 meters above sea level on the Tumut River, which is also called Jounama Pondage.

The place name is probably ( German: large) from the English word tall and the Aboriginal word Binji, or binge bingo ( German: stomach ) composed. The located near the village of Mount Talbingo is shaped like the big belly of a reclining man.

History

In Talbingo the post office opened on June 6, 1898, graduated in 1913 and was opened in 1965 again. The original town was flooded by the river Jounama Pondage in 1968 and built at a different location by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme again. Before the destruction of the village there was a hotel, farm, gas station and accommodations. There was a small settlement with five families. The Talbingo gas station was the birthplace of the author Miles Franklin, who belonged to their relatives until 1940.

Talbingo today

The new Talbingo grew rapidly as jobs created by the largest hydroelectric plant in Australia, the Snowy Mountains Hydro - system at the Talbingo Dam. Furthermore, there is now in place a gas station, golf course, motel, elementary school, grocery store, tourist park and accommodation, ski rental and a restaurant.

The town also thrives on tourism. Many families come in summer for water skiing on the dam or hiking in the Kosciuszko National Park. In winter, skiers come to Talbingo on the Selwyn Snowfields or other ski resorts in the Snowy Mountains.
