Taraco Municipality

The municipality Taraco is a district in the department of La Paz in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The municipality Taraco is one of seven Municipalities of the province Ingavi and lies in the northern part of the province. It is bordered to the north and west of Lake Titicaca, in the south and east by the municipality of Tiahuanacu.

The municipality has 30 localities ( Localidades ), the administrative center of the municipality is Taraco with 281 inhabitants in the northern part of the municipality. The largest town in the municipality is Coacollo with 596 inhabitants. (2001)

Geography

The municipality Taraco is on an average height of 3900 m on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central in the west to the east.

The mean average temperature in the region of Lake Titicaca lies at about 9 ° C, the annual precipitation is 500-600 mm (see climate chart Juliaca ). The region has a pronounced diurnal climate, the monthly average temperatures vary only slightly between 7 ° C in July and 12 ° C in December. the monthly rainfall range from less than 10 mm in the months of May to August and just over 100 mm from January to February.

Population

The municipality has an area of 108 km ² and a population density of 54.8 inhabitants / km ² ( 2001).

The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was at about 62 years, the infant mortality rate of 7.7 per cent ( 1992) declined to 6.7 percent in 2001.

The literacy rate for those over 15 years is 75.3 percent, and 86.7 percent, although in men and 64.4 percent for women ( 2001).

68.4 percent of the population speak Spanish, 97.1 percent speak Aymara, Quechua and 0.2 percent. (2001)

57.7 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 82.6 percent have no sanitary facilities ( 2001).

66.2 percent of the total 1,762 households owned a radio, a television 4.3 percent, 31.6 percent, a bicycle, a motorcycle 0.4 percent, 1.0 percent own a car, a refrigerator 0.3 percent and 0.1 percent a telephone. (2001)
