The municipality Tiahuanacu is one of seven Municipalities of the province Ingavi and lies in the northern part of the province. It is bordered to the north by Lake Titicaca, on the northwest by the municipality of Taraco, on the west by the municipality of Guaqui, to the south by the municipality of Jesús de Machaca, and on the east by the province of Los Andes.

The municipality has 87 localities ( Localidades ), the central location of the municipality is Tiawanacu with 747 inhabitants in the northern part of the municipality. The largest town in the municipality is Huacullani with 871 inhabitants. (2001)

Geography

The municipality Tiahuanacu is on an average height of 3900 m on Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Central in the west to the east.

The mean average temperature of the region is located at 8 ° C, the annual precipitation is 500-600 mm. The region has a pronounced diurnal climate, the monthly average temperatures vary only slightly between 7 ° C in July and 11 ° C in December. the monthly rainfall range from less than 10 mm during the months of June and July and close to 100 mm from December to February.

The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 61.8 years, the infant mortality rate of 7.7 per cent ( 1992) declined to 6.6 percent in 2001.

The literacy rate for those over 19 years is 68.1 percent, and 83.7 percent, although in men and 54.2 percent for women ( 2001).

64.8 percent of the population speak Spanish, 95.7 percent speak Aymara, Quechua and 0.1 percent. (2001)

58.0 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 61.8 percent have no sanitary facilities ( 2001).

71.6 percent of the total of 2,950 households have a radio, 12.2 percent have a television, 40.2 percent a bicycle, a motorcycle 0.6 percent, 1.1 percent, a car, a refrigerator 0.8 percent and 0.8 percent a telephone. (2001)
