Tavastia Proper

Kanta -Häme [ ˌ kɑntɑ hæmɛ ] ( swedish Egentliga Tavastland ) is a landscape ( Maakunta ) in Finland. It lies in the south of the country and forms the heartland of the historic landscape Häme. The name of Tavastia Proper means as much as " core -Häme ". The administrative headquarters of the landscape and the historic center of Häme is the town Hämeenlinna.

Geography

Kanta -Häme located in the southern inland areas of Finland. Neighboring landscapes are in southern Uusimaa, Varsinais -Suomi in the west, the north and Pirkanmaa Päijät -Häme in the east. The area of ​​the landscape Tavastia is 5706 km ².

History

The area of Kanta -Häme has been inhabited since the Iron Age. In the 13th century there were wrestling Sweden and the Novgorod Empire for supremacy. The construction of the Häme Castle end of the 13th century solidified the Swedish rule. Hämeenlinna became the administrative seat of the province of Häme and received city rights in 1639 by Per Brahe the Younger. It is the oldest city in the Finnish inland. Since 1775, the provinces were ruled Häme and Uusimaa from here. In the 1860s, the railroad was built to Helsinki.
