Telgárt

Telgárt ( 1948-1990 Slovak " Švermovo "; German Thier garden, Hungarian Garamfő - to 1902 Telgárt ) is a town in Slovakia at the southeastern edge of the Low Tatras in the upper reaches of the river Hron.

History

Telgárt was first documented in 1326. The almost exclusively Slovak population increased at the beginning of the 18th century at the behest of the governor of the county Honts, General István Koháry, the majority of the Greek Catholic faith.

Towards the end of World War II Telgárt was one of the centers of the Slovak National Uprising and was largely destroyed in a punitive measure by the German occupiers on September 5, 1944.

After the war, the town was rebuilt and in communist Czechoslovakia afterJan Šverma - named - one of the leaders of the Slovak National Uprising.

Today Telgárt is dominated by agriculture and tourism.
