Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S is a sedan with electric drive of Tesla Motors, which was presented as a prototype on 26 March 2009 and will be delivered to customers since 22 June 2012.

General

The Tesla S is the first realization of the concept of a 5 2- seater highway- grade electric cars in the luxury class. The work on the draft were announced in June 2008, initially under the project name " White Star ". The vehicle was first presented in an already wheeled prototype. Tesla has for the first time developed the chassis and the body in this model completely yourself.

The Model S has received several awards, including the output by an international jury of trade journalists price for the car of the year.

Market development

The Model S is considered as a serious competitor for the established luxury cars, especially German premium manufacturer, especially the S- Class from Mercedes- Benz, the 7 Series BMW and the Porsche Panamera. In the United States, the Model S in 2013 was by far the best-selling luxury sedan: about 18,000 compared to 13,303 S- class Mercedes, BMW 7 10,932, 10,727 Lexus LS, Audi A8 and 6300 5,421 Porsche Panamera. In Norway (April 2014) was the Tesla Model S have been awarded the best selling car of the month. 1493 piece which represents a market share of 10.8 per cent of new cars: the Tesla S in Norway even the best selling car in March 2014 was in a month ever.

Battery technology and charging

Similar to that produced in small series Tesla Roadster is based, the memory system of the Model S to cells in the form of ordinary lithium -ion laptop batteries for electric cars with optimized cell chemistry. However, more than 8000 (instead of the Roadster 6831 ) used cell to enable a higher storage capacity. There are two battery capacity with the ranges of 390 km (60 kWh) and 502 km (85 kWh). The originally planned 40 - kWh version is not produced due to lack of demand. Customers who ordered this version, get a battery with 60 kWh, which is limited by software to 40 kWh. All other properties of the larger system, such as the higher acceleration, remain.

In order to charge the Tesla Model S has a built-in 10 - kW - loader, which loads per hour energy for a range of up to 50 km. Optionally, a double loader with 20 kW is available. In the car- side connector is the charging cable, as " Mobile Connector " means, inserted. Clip-on adapters are supplied as standard or available as an option, so that a charge on almost all current connections is possible for the charging cable.

The Tesla Model S can (230 V/16 A) to be charged to both normal safety sockets as well as the blue camping plugs standard single phase. For charging with 400 - V three-phase AC adapter for the usual red sockets according to IEC 60309 is supplied with 11 kW standard. A charging plug type 2 for a wall box or charging station is optional. Only with this can be the 20 kW charging power of the double loader use.

The batteries can be fully charged at the Tesla -powered 90 kW " Supercharger " charging stations in 20 minutes to half in 40 minutes and to 80% in 75 minutes. The loading capacity of the power stations is currently being increased to 135 kW, which further shortens the loading time. According to the company Tesla is working on a charging system with a loading time of 5 to 10 minutes. When loading the " Supercharger " is loaded with a permanently installed at the charging station cable, bypassing the internal charger traction battery directly on DC power. Charging the Tesla Super Chargern is free for Tesla vehicles. Since the batteries are located under the floor of the vehicle, they can be exchanged in a simple process in 90 seconds.

For its 85 kWh battery pack in the Tesla Model S Tesla are 8 year warranty with unlimited mileage.

Performance and consumption data

The top speed is specified depending on the model with about 190 km / h to about 210 km / h. The sprint from zero to 100 km / h, the Model S will need, depending on battery 4.4 to 5.9 seconds.

In operation, the Tesla Model S no CO2, NOx or SO2 comes from a pure electric car. However, depending on the type of electricity production consumed primary energy or CO2, NOx or SO2 ejected, so that, by a more efficient, clean power generation of each electric car is ecological.

Operation and features

The operation of some onboard functions of the vehicle via a vertically built into the center console 17-inch touchscreen display. For a device of this size will be integrated into a production vehicle in the Model S for the first time. The chart is calculated by an nVidia Tegra 2. A wireless Internet access is part of the system. Benefits incurred by the driver in that it displayed the user interface is upgradable, expandable and customizable. For example, an additional driving mode for a creeper was subsequently integrated to customer via app.

Production

Tesla Model S manufactures in its own factory in Fremont, California. For the EU market, the Model S is assembled in the Dutch city of Tilburg from prefabricated parts.

The first delivery was on June 22, 2012, when ten customers could pick up their pre-ordered cars in Fremont. The first European delivery took place in Oslo in August 2013.

According to Elon Musk, the production rate was 80 units per week in September 2012. Production was increased to November to 200 units. End of 2012, production was 400 units per week, which corresponds to an annual production of about 20,000 units. By March 2013, the production rate was increased to an average of 500 units per week. The end of 2013 the production was 600 units per week. By the end of 2014, it should be increased to 1000 units per week.

Overall, Tesla sold in the first year (2012) 2650 and in the second year (2013 ) 22,400 cars.

Special

The independent American consumer magazine Consumer Reports certified that the Tesla Model S in the spring of 2013, the best car test results ever. The vehicle therefore cut in the tests performed better than all equipped with internal combustion engines competitors.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety NHTSA determined the highest ever measured safety standards for the Model S in the summer of 2013. In October 2013 burned in the U.S. state of Washington, part of the battery pack after a large metal part had gone through the floor pan. According to Tesla limited security fire on the front end of the car. A fire was in a Model S in smaller extent, in the spread better controlled and statistically five times less likely than for vehicles with liquid fuel. Two other fires occurred in October and November 2013 after accidents without personal injury. All vehicles delivered since March 2014 are equipped with a newly developed soil reinforcement of aluminum and titanium, which is designed to prevent such fires in the future. The retrofitting of existing vehicles can be done on request and is free of charge.

Tesla is building charging stations in the United States and Europe. The current cost of this " Supercharger " said charging stations are included in the purchase price of the car with 85 kWh and can be purchased as an option for the model with 60 kWh.
