Theodor Bergk

Wilhelm Theodor von Bergk ( May 22nd 1812 in Leipzig, † July 20, 1881 in Ragaz, Switzerland ) was a renowned German classical scholar. He was a member of Siebzehnerausschusses the Frankfurt National Assembly.

Life

Bergk was born the son of the translator and popular philosopher Johann Adam Bergk in Leipzig. In the same place he attended the humanist Thomas school. From 1830 to 1834 studied Classical Philology at Gottfried Hermann at Leipzig University. In 1836 he became a teacher at the Latin School in the main hall. From 1838 he taught at the Gymnasium Carolinum in Neustrelitz and under Augustus Meineke on Joachimsthal Gymnasium in Berlin. In 1840 he moved to the Gymnasium in Kassel.

In 1842 he became a full professor of philology at the University of Marburg to succeed Karl Friedrich Hermann. In 1852 he was called to Freiburg and 1857 Halle. For health reasons, he retired in 1869 and moved to Bonn. Literary itself Bergk has endeavored to the Greek poets. His main works were poetae lyrici Graeci and History of Greek Literature (1872 ). In addition, he was for several years the magazine for Alterthumswissenschaft ago. He sat up, inter alia, critically with Theodor Mommsen.

From 1847 to 1849 he was moderately liberal representatives of the University of Marburg in the Kurhessische national assembly. From 1848 to 1849 he was a member of Siebzehnerausschusses the Bundestag in Frankfurt.

From 1844, he was a regular member of the German Archaeological Institute, Rome. In 1845 he became a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences. In 1860 the Bavarian Academy of Sciences as an ordinary and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen took him on as a corresponding member (from 1876 foreign member ). In 1843 he was elected by the philologists meeting in Kassel chairman. In 1867 he took over the vice-presidency of the Halle philologists Assembly. He was also a member of the Examination Hall.

He died on 1881 in the spa town Ragaz.
