Theuley

Theuley is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Theuley situated at an altitude of 213 m above sea level, 12 km northeast of Dampierre- sur-Salon and about 27 km west of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the west of the department, in the northwest of the plateau landscape Saônetals, on the eastern edge of the Talniederung Gourgeonne.

The area of ​​7.50 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the region of the plateau north of the Saônetals. The western boundary runs along the Gourgeonne that provides for drainage Saône. The flood plain is on average 205 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer. At the southern exit of the village there is a more than 2 -acre pond. From the river, the municipality's area extends eastward to the adjacent plateau and into a dry valley that opens to Gourgeonne. The plateau reaches an average height of 240 m. It consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly sediments of the upper Jurassic period. In the Talniederung and on the plateau dominates agricultural use. To the east the area extends in the Bois de la Vendue. The southeastern boundary is the extensive grove of Grand Bois de Theuley, in the 262 meters, the highest elevation of Theuley is achieved. It separates the valley of the Saône Gourgeonne of the south adjacent lowlands.

Neighboring communities of Theuley are Mont -Saint -Léger and Vauconcourt - Nervezain in the north, Canal Court in the east, Vanne, Ray -sur -Saône -et- Tincey Pontrebeau in the south and Lavoncourt in the West.

History

Various findings, particularly brick fragments, a Roman vase, a statuette and bronze medals, point to an early settlement of the area. Theuley was formerly Theuley -les- Ray and Theuley -les- Lavoncourt to clarify the distinction between Theuley -lès- Vars. The place name derives from the Latin personal name Tullius and the suffix - acum and means as much as the courtyard of Tullius. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local rule had always been held by the Lords of Fouvent. Together with the Franche -Comté Theuley came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Theuley is a member of the 42 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières.

Attractions

The three-nave church Saint -Martin was built in 1853 on the site of a chapel from 1776 and has a bell tower in the Imperial style. In the village there are five Calvaire, a source that is passed to the Well ( 1820 ), and a Lavoir of 1880, which once served as a laundry and watering cattle.

Population

With 111 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Theuley one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. Throughout the 20th century, the population decreased significantly (1881, 295 people were counted ). Since the beginning of the 21st century, an increase in population is recorded.

Economy and infrastructure

Theuley was well into the 20th century mainly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. The water power of the Gourgeonne was formerly used for the operation of a mill. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses, especially in the wood processing industry. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road D70, which runs from Gray after Combeaufontaine. Further road links exist with Mont -Saint- Léger, Grande Court, Ray -sur -Saône and Tincey.
