Thomas of Frignano

Thomas Frignano (Italian Tommaso da Frignano; * 1305 in Modena, † November 19, 1381 ) was a Franciscan. He was 22 Franciscan Minister General, Patriarch of Grado, and was in 1378 by Pope Urban VI. appointed cardinal.

Life

Thomas Frignano came from a wealthy family from Modena. From a young age he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor and studied theology. After completing his studies he taught theology at religious convent in Bologna. 1352 he was appointed Provincial of the Province of the Order of Bologna, a post which he held until 1360. 1364 he was a founding member of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Bologna, where he worked as a professor in the following. On June 6, 1367 he won against his opponent Tommaso Racani and was called by Pope Urban VI. appointed 22 Franciscan Minister General in Assisi. On July 19, 1372 Frignano was elevated to Patriarch of Grado. On October 8, 1372 he was appointed by Pope Gregory XI. sent to Genoa to act as a mediator between Genoa and the Republic of Venice. His mission was successful. As a result, he joined repeated as papal ambassador at the court of King Louis of Hungary, Duke Albrecht III. on of Austria and the Doge of Venice, Andrea Contarini and mediated between the parties that fought out a series of conflicts in northern Italy.

Thomas Frignano died on November 19, 1381 and was buried in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome. The canonization of Brigitte of Sweden took place after Frignanos death on October 7, 1391 by Pope Boniface IX.
