Thonon-les-Bains

Thonon -les- Bains is a spa town in eastern France. It is located on Lake Geneva and has 33 928 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

The municipality is located in the wine region Savoie. White wines from the grape Altesse ( locally called roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin roussette de Savoie. For white wines, red wines and other grape varieties, the AOC Vin de Savoie applies.

History

From 1536 to 1569 the town belonged to Bern. In addition, Thonon -les- Bains was the sub-prefecture of the historical department of Léman, whose capital was Geneva.

Castle Ripaille

The Ripaille castle stands on the peninsula on the south bank of Lake Geneva. Count Amédée VI. was built there around 1371 a castle, of which no trace exists today. To Duke Amédée VIII, built in 1434 at the same place a new castle with seven towers, which can be seen today. It was damaged in a massive religious war, they began to build it to a Carthusian monastery with cells tract ( single cells for the monks ), church and buildings for the administration of the monastery of goods. After the French Revolution the abbey was sold as national property in the Napoleonic General Dupas. Stade Joseph Moynat

Since July 2005, the stadium is home to the playing in the Ligue 1 football club Evian Thonon Gaillard FC. It is also the home stadium of American football association Thonon Black Panthers.

Traffic

In Thonon -les- Bains various Department roads converge, including the D1005, which coincides with the course of the national highway N5. The town has a station on the railway line Léaz -Saint -Gingolph.

Furthermore, Thonon is connected by the railway network of passenger ship on Lake Geneva with numerous Seerainergemeinden.
