Thorgeir Stubø

Thorgeir Stubø ( born November 12, 1943 in Narvik, † October 22, 1986 ) was a Norwegian jazz guitarist and composer of modern jazz.

Life

Stubø oriented early on U.S. models such as John Coltrane, Jimmy Raney, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall. He grew up in Narvik and went in the 1960s to study in Oslo, where he earned a degree in German. At the same time he played in the Oslo Jazz scene, among other things with Jan Garbarek, Knut Riisnæs, drummer Svein Christiansen ( b. 1941 ) and Arild Andersen. He then worked as a teacher in Narvik, where he played in the local jazz scene.

In 1981 he received for his first album Notice ( Odin Records 1981) the Spellemannprisen. The music was geared to Chick Corea jazz-rock albums and players were Henning Gravrok (saxophone), Bjørn Haug age ( bass), Terje Bjørklund (piano) and Ernst- Wiggo Sandbakk (drums). This was followed by a live album ( Jazz Alive, Odin Records, 1983) from the Oslo Jazz Club Jazz Alive with Bernt Rosengren, Egil Kapstad, Terje Venaas, Egil Johansen, the album Flight ( Hot Club Records in 1983, with Krister Andersson ( sax ), Alex Riel, composed of studio and live recordings ) and Everything We Love ( Hot Club 1983/85 ) with guitarist Doug Raney. Recently he took a live album in Tromsø on ( Rhythm'a'ning, Cadence Jazz Records 1986) and The End of a Tune ( Cadence Jazz Records 1988) with Art Farmer and Doug Raney, which appeared after his death. He died at the age of 43 from cancer.

Furthermore, he was a passionate and good skier, outdoor activist and Norwegian champion in fly fishing. One of his compositions ( Mickey Finn ) he named after his lure designs.

In addition to Terje Rypdal he considered the most important Norwegian jazz guitarist and received posthumously in 1986 the Norwegian jazz prize Buddy pinches. In 1987, a foundation was established in his memory, which gives the Stubøprisen for Norwegian jazz musician since 1989 every two years. It is endowed with 15,000 Norwegian kroner.

He is the father of jazz guitarist Håvard Stubø ( b. 1977 ), the jazz singer Kjersti Stubø ( b. 1970 ) and the theater director Eirik Stubø (* 1965). A son of Kjersti Stubø is the electronica musician Mathias Stubø (* 1992).
