Thorsten Schmitt

Thorsten Schmitt ( born September 20, 1975 in Villingen -Schwenningen ) is a former German nordic combined.

Career

Schmitt, who competed for the SC Furtwangen, began in 1988 with the Nordic combined. At 14 he went to the Skiinternat Furtwangen / Otto -Hahn -Gymnasium Furtwangen. Since 1990, he practices the sport also at the national and at the international level since 1997. Until 1995 it belonged to Frank Erlbecks C squad, the combiner, then moved in Hermann Wine Guide perspective Nagano Olympic squad for 1998. Shortly before the Games on January 18, 1998 in Chaux- Neuve Schmitt gave his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup and reached the 12th place his first World Cup points. At the Olympics, he started in the team competition, finishing together with Matthias Looß, Ronny Ackermann and Jens Deimel at the end of the sixth. Shortly after the Olympics was diagnosed with testicular cancer Schmitt. After surgery and several chemotherapies but Schmitt was able to start again as soon as next season. As of January 2000, he was back to the World Cup squad and had already reached again towards the end of the month in Liberec the points. In February he participated in the team contest in B- World Cup in Baiersbronn and was with the team while in second for the first time on the podium.

In the Summer Grand Prix in August 2000 Schmitt surprised with the fifth rank in Klingenthal, but could not tie in Stams and Berchtesgaden, why he does not end up on it past # 27 in the overall standings. After he came in the 2000 /01 season until January 2001 in the World Cup squad and it remained without great success, Schmitt started at the beginning of the 2001/02 season first in the B World Cup. Less than a year later, in February 2004, he was the team World Cup in Oberstdorf, together with the team in second for the first time in an A - Cup on the podium. He repeated this success with the team on 11 February 2005 at Pragelato. In single overall World Cup he finally succeeded in season 2005/ 06 with rank 18 overall his best result. At the 2006 Olympics in Turin, he was part of the German squad, but was not the only combiner for use.

On 31 January 2007 he announced end of his career. Reason for the decision is not nominated for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. Previously, he won the World Cup in Seefeld in Tirol with 16th place in the sprint again for World Cup points and closed the 2006/07 season finally from a 31 overall.

Thorsten Schmitt is the older brother of the famous ski jumper Martin Schmitt. He lives in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. With his friend Christoph Graf, he ran the Internet company Smaitec.
