Tim Thornton (bishop)

Timothy " Tim " Martin Thornton ( born April 14, 1957) is a British Anglican theologian and Bishop of Truro since 2008 in the Church of England.

Life

Thornton grew up the son of a pastor in Plymouth. He attended Devonport High School for Boys in Plymouth, Devon. Thornton studied theology at the University of Southampton and graduated there with an honors degree in Theology from. In preparation for the priesthood, he attended St Stephen 's House Theological College in Oxford.

In 1980, he was consecrated in the Cathedral of Wakefield as a deacon in 1981 was ordained priest. In 1981 he was assistant priest in Todmorden in the Diocese of Wakefield. Thornton is considered to be open-minded, experienced and sensitive churchman and a prime mediator of diverse views. Thornton sees the future of the Church generally positive. In his view, the Gospel could be communicated to all people. The Church must go out into the world and teach the Faith.

Other religious areas of interest Thorntons are inter-religious dialogue and cooperation with the Anglican Church in Africa, particularly with the Episcopal Church of the Sudan. Together with the representatives of the Methodist Church, he also organized pilgrimages in the diocese of Salisbury.
