Tohvri is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Emmaste ( Emmaste vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description

Tohvri today has no permanent residents more (as at 31 December 2011).

The place is located directly on the Baltic coast. The strong west wind, which pushes against the island, making the beaches and the sea at Tohvri restless.

Soviet coastal battery

South of the historic village core are seen near the rocky beach, the remains of a large seawall. It was 1940/41, created in the wake of the Second World War by the Red Army in Tohvri. The aim was primarily to protect the nearby port of Sõru from attack. The local population had largely left the place.

After the war the military equipment remained largely empty. 1966 years moved to the barracks a geriatric institution. Today, the former defense systems are under monument protection.
