Token Racing

History

Originally planned previous owner Ron Dennis to get his Formula 2 team Rondel for the 1974 season of Formula 1 at the start, but what failed due to the withdrawal of the main sponsor Motul because of the 1973 oil crisis. Dennis had already announced the development of a chassis in order, the team had but shortly thereafter sell. The new team owner Tony Vlassopoulo and Ken Grob named the team from now on tokens, each composed of the first syllable of her given name. With a Cosworth engine, Pirelli tires and Shell as the main sponsor you went into Formula 1. The chassis designation was " RJ02 " after the initials of designer Ray Jessop.

As a driver, Tom Pryce, who competed in the British Formula 5000 so far committed. The fifth race of the season, the Belgian Grand Prix at Nivelles - Baulers, joined the team at the first time. Pryce qualified as 20th out of 32 participants, left in the race due to a collision with Jody Scheckter in Tyrrell however. Also for the Grand Prix of Monaco asked to participate, but this was rejected by the FISA due to the inexperience of Pryce. As a result, the Walise left the team in the direction of Shadow.

The next Grand Prix, took part in the token, took place at Brands Hatch. As a new driver David Purley was obliged already played four Formula 1 races in the preseason. It failed by one place in the qualification with the 26th of 34 grid positions and then left the team again.

The next two races in Germany and Austria should already be the last in the short team history. As a pilot, the British Formula 1 newcomer Ian Ashley was used. On the demanding Nordschleife Ashley qualified as a 26 for the last spot and six riders could leave behind. Ashley was in the meantime on the eighth rank, but lost a tire and had to travel half way around the track with three wheels before he lodged a two-minute pit stop. He reached one lap behind in 14th and last the finish line. Also at the Grand Prix of Austria, where Ashley is qualified as the 25th, occurred during the race to tire problems that forced him to two pit stops. With eight laps he was not classified.

After these disappointing incidents to Ashley's sponsors withdrew and the team had to withdraw for lack of money. The car was used in the next year at Safir Engineering for the Race of Champions and at the BRDC International Trophy.
