Tomas Sandström

Tomas Sandström ( born September 4, 1964 in Jakobstad, Finland ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player who from 1984 to 1999 for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the National Hockey League played.

Career

Born in Finland, the Swedish parents grew up in Sweden. As a junior he played in at Fagersta HK. The NHL was very early became aware of the talented Sandström and he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft al 1982 in the second round 36 of the New York Rangers. He joined the First League to Brynäs IF and played in his home country at the 1984 Junior World Championships. Through good services he arose, and attention has been nominated for the Swedish national ice hockey team to participate in the Olympic Games in Sarajevo. He and his team reached the bronze medal.

After he had played for Sweden at the Canada Cup in 1984, he joined the 1984/85 season with the Rangers. A good performance in his first season was rewarded with an appointment to the All Rookie team in which this year also Chris Chelios and Mario Lemieux were. During the six years at Rangers, he participated in three World Cups. None had great success the team here in 1985 and 1989. During the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1987 but he was instrumental in the first title for the Tre Kronor team since 1962 a major role. 90 seconds left in the game against the Soviet Union launched Håkan Loob an attack one he was able to conclude with the equalizer. Among other things, Marty McSorley was given for him in February 1994 from the Pittsburgh Penguins. He remained there until the end of January 1997 as he is for Greg Johnson to the Detroit Red Wings. For the Red Wings, he remained only end of the season, but that was crowned by winning the Stanley Cup. His last team in the NHL were then the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, for whom he played for two years. The Swedish team honored his performance in these years, with the nomination for the Olympic Games in Nagano.

In 1999, he finished his career in the NHL and still played in Sweden a few years for the Malmö Redhawks.
