Toorak, Victoria

Toorak is a suburb of Melbourne, the capital of the Australian state of Victoria. He is part of the Local Government Area City of Stonnington. The district, whose origins date back to the 1850s, is situated about 3 km southeast of the city center and had about 13,000 inhabitants in 2011. Toorak is located on the south bank of the Yarra River, on its opposite shore of the Richmond district is located.

The name of the district was the property " Toorak House " borrowed, which was built in the area in 1849 by a Melbourne businessman and served as the residence of the governors of the state until 1878. Today it is used as a consulate. The word comes from the Toorak Aboriginal language and probably stands for " schilfiger swamp " or " black crow ".

From the 1880s, numerous stately manors emerged which formed the reputation of Toorak. In recent decades, many of these houses were replaced by apartment blocks.

Toorak is considered wealthiest and most exclusive district of Melbourne. The property prices are the highest in Australia, and even exceed, situated near the Sydney Harbour districts Point Piper and Darling Point. Expensive SUVs (SUVs ) are referred to in Melbourne often ironically referred to as Toorak Tractors. The Toorak Road, which runs from South Melbourne via South Yarra from west to east through Toorak, is considered to be shopping for the more sophisticated demand and is also bordered by restaurant operations corresponding goodness.
