Traffic Message Channel

About Traffic Message Channel ( TMC) traffic disruption in the inaudible range of the FM signal are transmitted in digital form. Modern navigation systems can receive traffic reports via TMC and thus create routes to bypass traffic jams and obstacles ( dynamic route guidance ).

To use TMC TMC -enabled radio receiver is necessary. Typically, there are those in vehicle navigation systems. There are also car radios, decouple the TMC data via an interface ( TMC -out ), without having to decode itself. Further processing of these data can then be performed in a connected (eg, portable ) navigation system.

The broadcasting of TMC takes place now in many European countries by numerous radio stations. However, the quality of the reports is very different.

Usually TMC services are free to receive ( freeTMC ). In some countries, there are also additional paid TMC services ( PayTMC ) that promise a better quality of traffic information. PayTMC is either broadcast encrypted or uses its own "Location Table" ( "LT", see below).

  • 4.1 Belgium
  • 4.2 China
  • 4.3 Denmark
  • 4.4 Germany 4.4.1 German TMC station
  • 4.4.2 German Navteq Traffic transmitter
  • 4.18.1 TMC in planning

Principle of operation

Each transport impairment is sent as a separate TMC message. A TMC message consists of an event code and a location code, possibly an additional limitation in time (decay time ). After elimination of a fault, this fault message is canceled by another TMC message. If this is not received (eg, because the recipient has now removed from the reception range of the transmitter ), the error message is alternatively deleted by the recipient upon reaching the expiry period.

RDS - TMC messages are bit / s transfer with about 60, which corresponds to about 10 per minute.

The message is after the Alert C standard (ISO 14819 ) coded. This includes a list of about 1460 events. Using this list, the message can be translated into a form understandable to the user.

Position codes

The assignment of a position code ( Location Code ) to a geographic location via lists ( Location Table, LT ). These are not subject to international management. Each country will award the position codes for individual road sections itself in some countries even more such lists from different vendors exist in parallel. Because of the maximum data length of 64,000 positions can be coded, which makes TMC relatively inaccurate. Therefore it is not possible in Germany to encode all road sections or intersections.

Swell

Source of the traffic information are typically the police, traffic cameras, stationary measuring cross sections ( inductive loops, IR / radar sensors) or floating car data.

TMC Forum

The TMC Forum was a non-profit organization whose membership is comprised of service providers, terminal equipment, automotive and card makers, public institutions, broadcasters and other organizations. The TMC Forum sees itself both as a platform for discussion on the topic of traffic information in general, on the other hand, it maintains the TMC standard (ISO 14819 ) and further develop. On 11 November 2007, the TMC Forum, together with the TPEG Forum in the Traveller Information Services Association, TISA short, risen. The tasks of the TMC Forum will be continued by TISA. While TMC describes a protocol, the Transport Protocol Experts Group ( TPEG ) is concerned with the specification of protocol families. The TISA certified submitted by the countries Location Tables ( LT) after examination on the basis of clearly defined validation rules.

Security

The TMC protocol does not own encryption methods, as the impact of an attack were classified as rather insignificant. The manipulation described by Heise Security requires a mobile station that is broadcasting on the same frequency as the legal radio stations. The operation of such a transmitter is illegal in most countries, and the technical and financial effort is high.

Countries with TMC services

In the following, an overview of the TMC activities of various countries.

Belgium

A free TMC service, TIC -VL is available in the area of Flanders. Offers sent by Verkeerscentrum Antwerp and VRT on Radio 2.

In the southern part of Belgium, a free TMC service is tested, Wallonia. Aired by RTBF on Classic 21 The service is a service of Centre PEREX of the Ministère de l' Équipement et des Transports ( MET ) in collaboration with TMC4U.

Since 2009 there is also a statewide CA -TMC providers (Be -Mobile ).

Tritel created the LT at the direction of regional communities. Since mid- 2007, the TMC messages are broadcast by the LT version 2.1a, the N- roads are included in the LT. A LT version 2.2 has been certified.

China

Two TMC services there since 2008 in Beijing. Be received at least within the 5th ring road.

CenNavi sends with PI - C000 ( frequency = 91.5, PS - Name = " 106.1 " )

AutoNavi sends with PI code C001 ( frequency = 90.0, PS - Name = " BJ90.0 " )

Audi has its Gen 3 navigation systems for AutoNavi services released on September 12.

Both providers are planning to cover China first but the coastal metropolis. The goal is to offer for 2010 Shanghai.

In Guangzhou, there is since 2008 a traffic information based on the GPS movement data of 17,000 taxis. The system - built and operated by Siemens - reached the road users through SMS and other ways via China Mobile. Other cities and regions are in preparation.

The free TMC service can be received over several radio stations of the ARD broadcasting network and the FM station of Radio Germany ( Germany radio ). NAVTEQ Traffic utilizes many channels of private and local radio stations.

The Federal Highway Research Institute ( Federal Highway Research Institute ) published the LT ( = Location Table, also called " Location Code List " or LCL called ) that were compiled by each state authorities and organizations. The LCL is updated every year in Germany. Since 9 April 2013, the LCL 12.0 is the valid version of the Location Code List ( LCL) and 4:01 the valid version of the Event Code List ( ECL). Compared to the previous version 2,508 changes were made, added 656 locations and 126 deleted, so now 46 395 locations are included. The previous version 11.0 was valid from 17 April 2012 to April 7, 2013.

The Location Code List is made up of area locations ( Area code, eg cities), linear locations ( linear codes, eg roads ) and point locations ( Point Locations, eg parking, connection points ) together. While on motorways and many main roads of all relevant points are shown in the LCL, it is in the downstream road network still large gaps between detected points. A comprehensive collection of all nodes on less important roads is not possible due to technical limitations.

In version changes make all broadcasters, hotlines and other organizations, as simultaneously as possible to the new LCL and ECL to. In principle, the same would also have to be updated all recipients. In practice, however, this often draws on for months. The information content can be falsified in not yet converted by receivers (easy).
