Trnava Region

The Trnavský kraj ( Trnava Region ) is an administrative region in western Slovakia.

Districts

The Kraj consists of the following 7 districts ( okresy ):

  • Dunajská Streda
  • Galánta
  • Hlohovec
  • Piešťany
  • Senica
  • Skalica
  • Trnava

Geography

The region has an area of ​​4158 km ² and 555 509 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) is narrow and elongated, and is considered joining region between Bratislava and the rest of Slovakia. It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Austria to the northwest and Hungary to the south. The northern third (districts Senica and Skalica ) is separated by the Little Carpathians from the rest and is used primarily by the Zahorie lowlands with its two divisions - formed - the hilly Chvojnická pahorkatina and the flat Borská nížina. Parts of the Myjavská pahorkatina and the White Carpathians engage in the field of Krajs. South of the Little Carpathians is the large Danube valley, divided into the Danube hilly country in the north and the Danube plain in the south, including a portion of the Great Rye Island. In the line - Hlohovec Piešťany still extends the Inowetz. Larger rivers are the Morava in the northwest, the Waag in the east, the Little Danube and the Danube in the south, here jammed in hydropower Gabčíkovo. The highest point is Mount Záruby ( 767 m nm), which is also the highest mountain of the Small Carpathians; the lowest point is on the Little Danube near the village of Okoč (110 m nm).

Four conservation areas are located in the area of ​​Krajs: Biele Karpaty (White Carpathians), Dunajské luhy ( Donauauen ), Malé Karpaty ( Small Carpathians) and Zahorie ( Marchauen ).

From the perspective of administrative divisions of Trnavský borders kraj Region to the Trenčín in the north, the Nitriansky Region in the east, the Hungarian county of Győr- Moson -Sopron in the south, the Bratislavskı Region in the west, and Lower Austria and the South Moravian Region in the northwest.

Historical administrative units

In the Kingdom of Hungary, the area in the south around the city of Trnava and in smaller sizes in the north part of the county were Pressburg; smaller parts in the south belonged to Moson county and the county Raab. The rest belonged to the county Neutra.

Population

The Trnavský kraj is the least populated of all Kraje, but not the smallest area. The population density is 133/km ² and the proportion of the urban population is around 50 % (as of 2008). The capital and the largest city is Trnava ( Trnava ) with about 68,000 inhabitants, other cities are Piešťany, Hlohovec ( Freistadtl ) Galánta ( Gallandau ) and Dunajská Streda. Overall, the landscape association of 251 municipalities, 16 cities. The Slovaks form, according to the 2001 census 74% of the population; the large Hungarian minority ( 23.7 %) is concentrated in the south; it forms the majority in Okres Dunajská Streda (87%) and very large minority in Okres Galánta ( 41%). The Czechs are only a proportion of 0.9%.

After religion, the Roman Catholic church dominates with about 78 %; the second place is the Evangelical Church with 4.4%. About one- eighth of the population identified themselves as atheists.
