Trnovec nad Váhom

Trnovec nad Váhom ( until 1927 slovak " Tornok "; Hungarian Tornóc ) is a municipality in Okres Šaľa in Slovakia.

Location

The place is located in the Danubian Lowland on the banks of the Waag, on the main road I/75 between Šaľa (5 miles west) and Nové Zámky ( 27 km southeast ). The village also has its own railway station on the route Bratislava -Budapest.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1113 as Durmuz. By early 1918 he was part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the county Neutra and there was the seat of the chair district Šaľa; then he came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Because of the First Vienna Award, he was from 1938 to 1945 for Hungary.

According to the controversial 1910 census, the city had an almost purely Magyar village of 2458 inhabitants in 2236 were Magyars. According to the 2001 census were of 2541 inhabitants in 1900 Slovaks and Magyars 607.

The former foreign minister of Slovakia Eduard Kukan was born here in 1939.

Administratively, the town is divided in addition to the main town yet in the districts of Horny Jatov (Hungarian Felsőjattó ) Kľučiareň (Hungarian Szandner puszta ) and Nový Dvor (Hungarian Újmajor ).
