Tsinghua University

The Tsinghua University (Chinese清华大学/清华大学, Pinyin Qinghua Daxue, W.-G. Ch'ing -hua Ta - hsueh ), according to today's phonetic Pinyin actually Qinghua, is a university in Beijing, People's Republic of China, which for the heard most selective and prestigious universities in China. National and international rankings include Tsinghua as one of the two best universities in China. Tsinghua University is also a member of the C9 League, the Chinese counterpart to the American Ivy League, which was created in 2009 and the nine most prestigious universities in China combined.

The university is located in the northwestern Beijing's Haidian District, bordering the Peking University. The international name spelling Tsinghua today officially used by the university dates from the period before the introduction of Pinyin. Consciously maintaining their own tradition, the University has decided even after the introduction of Pinyin for maintaining its current spelling. With the motto of Self- Discipline and Social Commitment, the Tsinghua University has prescribed claims to academic excellence and the well-being of Chinese society.

History

Tsinghua University was established in 1911 in Beijing with compensation money from the Chinese government for the Boxer Rebellion to the United States. Originally Tsinghua was a preparatory school for Chinese students who were to be sent by the government to study in the U.S., but in 1925 it was transformed into a university. 1937 at the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War, the Tsinghua University was merged with Peking University and Nankai University and moved to Kunming. After the war, all three universities were moved back again to Beijing and Tianjin. A portion of the workforce opposed the relocation and moved in 1956 to Hsinchu in Taiwan, where it under the name of National Tsing Hua University (Chinese国立 清华大学/国立 清华大学, Pinyin Guoli Qinghua Daxue, Tongyong Pinyin Guoli Cinghuá Dasyue, abbreviated as NTHU ) first established an Institute of Nuclear Sciences. The two Tsinghua universities are no longer connected to each other, but each claiming to be the true Tsinghua University.

In 1952, the Tsinghua to a Polytechnic, in the course of a national reform of the university system. Over the reforms of 1978, other courses were made possible, for example, management, economics and law. 1999 or a school of Art and Design was opened.

Tsinghua University currently has about 26,000 students ( as of 2008), of which the most obvious in the campus student apartments live. The campus itself is home to the former imperial gardens.

Schools and faculties

Tsinghua has a total of 20 schools and 12 departments, which are in turn divided into 48 departments. Some of these schools are also divided again into individual faculties. Overall, Tsinghua is an elite school for Chinese party officials with a strong focus on engineering. Today the university has 2600 teachers, 3700 graduate students and about 26,000 students. There are 144 co-operation with foreign universities. With its 15 laboratories, it is one of the leading research centers in China.

Tsinghua University is assessed together with Peking University in national and international rankings frequently as one of the two best universities in the People's Republic of China.
