Týr (band)

Týr [ tʊi ː ɹ ] (after the Germanic god of war, Tyr ) is a metal band in the Faroe Islands. Most of the songs are written by Heri Joensen, the head of the band, and grab a large extent on Faroese ballads.

History

Týr was founded in January 1998 in Copenhagen, as the singer and guitarist Heri Joensen met his old band mates Kári Streymoy. In 2000, they took along with Jón Joensen and Pól Arni Holm on their first demo, on which they set to music in addition to their own songs and traditional texts such as " Long Serpent langi ".

After Jón Joensen left the band Týr in 2002 took on the debut album How far to Asgaard, which was released on the label Tutl. The song " Ólavur Riddararós " was released as a single with the singer Allan Streymoy and new guitarist Terji Skibenæs. In June 2003, their second album Eric the Red, named after Erik the Red.

Since late 2005, Týr is the Austrian label Napalm Records. The new contract brought a re-release of Eric the Red at the international level. In September 2006, followed by the new album Ragnarok, named after Ragnarok, the end of the world in Norse mythology. As part of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia tour Týr came as support for the German metal band on The Horsemen of the Apocalypse. A further European tour closed on this tour with Amon Amarth in November 2006. In 2007 the band played at the Wacken Open Air and 2008 they toured with bands like Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Moonsorrow within the Paganfestes through North America and Europe.

From the end of 2007 you could find on the MySpace page of the band a studio diary showing the images of the published 2008 album Country. Half a year later the first album How far to Asgaard by Napalm Records re-released due to the fact that there was no longer commercially bought this album, but the demand was still there at the same time.

On March 27 via Napalm Records was a split EP with the name Black Sails Over Europe, which includes new songs from Alestorm, Týr Heidevolk and also published. All three pieces of Týr can also be found on their album By The Light Of The Northern Star. The split is limited to 1,000 pieces.

On 27 May 2009, the fifth studio album by the band, By The Light Of The Northern Star, released via Napalm Records. It was taken in early 2009, produced by Jacob Hansen and mixed at Finnvox Studios and mastered.

On May 12, 2013 were posted on her Facebook page that drummer Kári Streymoy drop out due to a back injury suffered in 2008. For the recording of the new album the drummer of the band Nile (band), one of the fastest drummers in the world was on May 15, 2013, George Kollias, committed. He is the first musician in Tyr, who is not from the Faroese Islands. In addition, the new album is Valkyrja published in September 2013.

Style

Týr play a usually slower mix of heavy metal and Faroese ballads, a melodic and harmonic variation of folk and Viking metal, which shows strong progressive influences. Especially be prominent within their genre typical environment of bands is the permanent use of clean vocals and the lack of any growls. This style of music is now referred to as the Faroe Islands kvæðamálmur (English ballads - Metal). Their motives are based in Norse mythology, their texts mostly Faroese or English. Furthermore, some of the songs in Danish, Gøtudanskt or in the Icelandic language is present.
