Ãœbersaxen

Übersaxen is a municipality in the district of Feldkirch in Vorarlberg Austria with 626 inhabitants (December 31, 2013).

The word Übersaxen consists of a Latin and a German part together: It is from the German word " about" and the Latin " saxa " = stone or rock, and so called in German " on the stone " or " on the rocks ".

Geography

Übersaxen is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Feldkirch to 899 meters. 51.4 % of the area is forested. There are no other local villages in Übersaxen.

History

The Habsburgs ruled the areas in Vorarlberg changing of Tyrol and Further Austria from ( Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria, then back to Austria. For the Austrian state of Vorarlberg belongs Übersaxen since its founding in 1861. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

Art project " Gisalz "

For the project " Gisalz 98 " in Übersaxen the Vorarlberg artist Herbert Fritsch made ​​use of the traditional since the medieval house sign of Walser.
