The University of Coimbra ( Portuguese: Universidade de Coimbra, Latin: Universitas Conimbrigensis ) is a research university in the Portuguese city of Coimbra. It is the oldest university in the country and one of the oldest in Europe.

The University of Coimbra is named for the so-called Coimbra Group of European research universities.

History

1290 it from the Portuguese king Dionysius (Dom Dinis ) was founded.

The University moved to the beginning of their story several times the location between Coimbra and Lisbon until 1537 by King John III. was finally settled in Coimbra. The Botanical Garden of the University ( Jardim Botanical Garden since Universidade de Coimbra ) in Beja Litoral was founded in 1772 by the Count of Pombal as a teaching garden for future physicians and is the oldest botanical garden in Portugal. It has a rich collection of plants, in addition to tropical plants and Australian species also South African and Californian species were recorded in the 19th century.

On 22 June 2013, the university was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The University of Coimbra has about 22,000 students and consists of eight faculties:

The color of the university is dark green, the colors of the faculties are the following:
