The University of the Free State ( Afrikaans: Universiteit van which Vrystaat, English: University of the Free State ) - short UFS, UV or Kovsie - is a state university in the South African city of Bloemfontein, capital of the Free State Province, and in Phuthaditjhaba in the east of free State.

History

The University of the Free State was established as Grey College in 1904 and at the time had six students. After the first financial statements in 1905 to set up as Grey University College ( GUC ) was announced in 1910 she was awarded the State of the official title of an educational institution. Since the late 1940s, was the Afrikaans language university, also called the university into Universiteitskollege van Oranje - Vrystaat. In 1950, she was recognized as the University of the South African Parliament and was named Universiteit van Oranje - Vrystaat ( RODs ); since 2001 it bears its present name. Since 1993, the UFS offers courses and degrees in both Afrikaans and English.

Courses and fees

At the UFS, there are over 190 undergraduate majors, which are the Bachelor degree or diploma. In the further studies will differentiate between Master, Magister, Honours Degree and PhD. Altogether there are about 300 possible statements, including about equal numbers of master's and Master's and doctoral programs.

The University of the Free State raises tuition fees and charges. To apply, fall 165-245 card edge, for a place 3090-7775 border, depending on the degree and accommodation. The annual tuition fees are the degree -dependent and move 16000-20000 edge ( as of 2011).

For gifted students, UFS offers scholarships, the amount of which is dependent on the coursework 2830-13500 edge; financially ill-posed, students can apply for loans.

Organization

Management and Boards

The university is headed by a Rector at which the Rector and Vice-Chancellor, three vice-rectors and an audit officer belong. The Registrar is responsible as the highest representative of the University for the award of degrees, he is elected for five years. The line is the University responsible, which defines, together with the Senate Committee and the Executive Committee of the guidelines and is responsible for financial planning and academic affairs.

Campus and faculties

The UFS is located on three campuses. On the Bloemfontein campus ( 28,800 students) in the city center, the South Campus (870 students ) in the south of the city and the Qwaqwa campus ( 4,300 students) in Phuthaditjhaba.
