Ãœrzig

Ürzig is a municipality in the Mosel valley in the district of Bernkastel -Wittlich, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Bernkastel- Kues. Ürzig is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

Geographical location

The local church is surrounded by vineyards in the Mosel large loop between Bernkastel- Kues and Traben -Trarbach, near Trier. Ürzig is located on the left bank of the river where extremely steep slopes rise to the Eifel; on the opposite side of the Moselle, the valley widens to a very flat landscape that eventually borders on the Hunsrück.

Neighboring municipalities are building village in the north, Kinheim and soils in the east and Zeltingen -Rachtig the south and west. Nearest regional center is about nine kilometers to double town of Bernkastel- Kues and about eight kilometers away Wittlich. Trier, the largest city in the region is about 37 kilometers away.

Population

The population density is 150 inhabitants per square kilometer. As a dialect is still spoken Moselle Franconian in the region, a dialect group of the Middle Franconian.

History

In the vicinity were found remains of settlements from the Bronze Age. Around 500 BC, settled the Treverians, a Celtic- Germanic mixed people, of which the Latin name of the city of Trier, Augusta Treverorum derived, the region around Trier. Around 50 BC to 500 AD, followed by the Romans. Viticulture has always been important economic activity; especially spiritual wineries, such as the Abbey Himmerod Carmelite Springiersbach whose farms have been preserved, settled in the Mosel village.

Since 1946 it has been part of the newly founded state of Rhineland- Palatinate.

Culture and sights

Structures

The historic center of Ürzig is full of small alleys and angles as well as the old patrician and half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Therefore, the entire historic quarter, with the Catholic parish church of St. Maternus and the half-timbered houses was placed on the main square as a conservation zone under monument protection.

Knights gender once built three castles, only one of which is still preserved as a ruin. Is a sundial on the remains of a former watch tower in the vineyards. The Ürziger sundial is the oldest sundial on the Mosel. A baroque Moenchhof on the promenade was the end of the 1980s as the setting for the television production Moselbrück.

Ürziger spice garden

In June 2005 the Ürziger spice garden was inaugurated as a regional attraction. In the project on behalf of the Cultural Office Bernkastel -Kues is a Mediterranean herb garden in an exposed steep slopes of Ürziger Würzgartens. There grow and bloom a total of 10,000 perennials in over 160 varieties, thousands of bulbous plants native shrubs, wild roses and historic roses as well as traditional medicinal and aromatic plants.

Viniculture

In Ürzig today there are several wineries that grow Riesling mainly on steep slopes. Best-known vineyard is the Ürziger Würzgarten; Furthermore, there is the less known vineyard Ürziger Goldwingert. They belong to the wine growing region Mosel- Saar- Ruwer.

Traffic

Ürzig is located on the main road 53, which runs along the Mosel from Trier to Alf. It is part of the Mosel Wine Road, a 242 km long tourist route from Perl on the German- French border to Koblenz. Immediately upon Ürzig the construction of a high- Moselle crossing the main road 50 is planned.

The place has a dock for the Mosel shipping. From May to October it is approached regularly scheduled services from the Mosel Ship Tourism.

The train station of Ürzig located just three kilometers outside the actual town on the railway line route Mosel between Trier and Koblenz.

The local church is one of the transport association Region Trier ( VRT).
