The USS Hawaii ( SSN -776 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy. It is the third unit of the Virginia class.

History

The Hawaiian was given together with its two predecessors and one successor on 30 September 1998 in order. The contract for Hawaii were in connection to the Electric Boat, a part of General Dynamics Group. The keel of the submarine was laid on 27 August 2004 at the shipyard of EB in Groton, Connecticut. On 17 June 2006, the boat was named after the state of Hawaii, godmother was the governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle. The commissioning of the boat was held in Groton on May 5. Home port of Hawaii was New London, Connecticut.

The end of 2007 began the first installation of the boat, which lasted until May 2008. The last few months was the submarine used for observation of drug smugglers. Several boats with drugs have been discovered and applied by surface vessels. For the crew, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation was awarded. 2009, Hawaii was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. In August 2010, the submarine moved into the Pacific.
