Vágar lies to the west of the main island Streymoy and is connected with it since 2002 by about 4 km long Vágartunnel. This tunnel is the most ambitious construction project in the history of the Faroe Islands and shortened the travel time between the airport and the capital Vágar. West of Vágar are the Tindhólmur and the ' bird of paradise ', the island Mykines. Together they form the Vágar region, one of the six SYSSEL of the Faroe Islands.

Vágar was then a security zone, and who wanted to enter the island, needed a special pass. The contact between the locals and the soldiers is described as cordial. Friendships and even marriages emerged at that time.

To the west lie the small villages Bøur and Gásadalur. Gásadalur until 2004, was one of the most isolated villages in Europe. Since it is connected by a tunnel to the outside world. The postman, who until then several times a week about the difficult - and popular among tourists - had to go trail of Bøur after Gásadalur had to pass through the honor to make the first blast for the tunnel, and the completed tunnel first.

Two other isolated places on Vágar however, were abandoned: Víkar despite its agriculturally favorable conditions in 1910, and Slættanes, although a beautiful setting is considered scenic, 1964 Old trails form a network over the whole island and allow natural excursions in the now uninhabited northern part.
