Velleclaire

Velleclaire is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Velleclaire situated at an altitude of 243 m above sea level, 5 km north-east of Gy and about 25 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the southwest of the department, on a hill at the northern edge of the Monts de Gy.

The area of ​​4.13 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the rolling countryside of south-east of the Saône. The northern part of the municipality is occupied by relatively weak in relief terrain, which is primarily used for agricultural purposes. To the southeast passed via a 100 m high plateau terrain level to the Monts de Gy. On this wooded height is achieved with 406 m the highest elevation of Velleclaire. The heights of the Monts de Gy in the range of Velleclaire consist of sediments of the middle and upper Jurassic period, while the north subsequent Vorhöhen are predominantly composed of Cretaceous deposits. Topographical include the town area to the catchment area of the Petite Morte, but can be found on the premises no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

History

In the Middle Ages Velleclaire belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local rule was up to the Lords of Gy, which were dependent on the Archbishops of Besançon. Together with the Franche -Comté Velleclaire came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. The municipality does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Bucey -lès- Gy.

Attractions

The Chapel of Velleclaire was built in 1841. In the Mairie ( Municipal House ) is a Madonna statue from the 17th century.

Population

With 109 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Velleclaire one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. Throughout the 20th century, the population increased slowly but continuously (1886 or 148 persons were counted ).

Economy and infrastructure

Velleclaire was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses, especially in the precision engineering industry. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road D474 which leads from Gray via Gy to Vesoul. Another road connection with Vantoux.
