Vicki Cardwell

Vicki Cardwell BEM (* April 21, 1955 in Adelaide as Vicki Hoffmann ) is a retired Australian squash player.

Career

Vicki Cardwell began her career in 1979. In 1983, the left-hander became world champion when she defeated Rhonda Thorne with 9:1, 9:3 and 9:4 in Australia. Two years earlier, in 1981, they had against Thorne in World Cup finals in the cold. In Canada, she had to admit defeat just her compatriot 10:8, 4:9, 5:9, 9:7 and 7:9. In the introduced in April 1983 world rankings, she stood right at the top, where they remained for twelve months. With the Australian national team she joined in 1981, 1987 and 1989 World Cups. In 1981, the team won the title against England, while 1987 and 1989 had to surrender to the English in the final itself.

At the British Open, she reached the finals five times. In their first playoff participation In 1978, she succumbed without its own set win her compatriot Sue Newman. From 1980 to 1983 she was again consistently in the finals and won all games. In 1980, she beat Sue Cogswell and 1981 Margaret Zachariah each in three sets. In the years 1982 and 1983, she defeated Lisa Opie each in four sets.

In 1997, she ended her career. It was in 1981 awarded the British Empire Medal, followed at a later time shooting in the Australian Sports Hall of Fame and the Squash Australia Hall of Fame. In 2013 she was elected as a director to the board of the Australian Squash Federation Squash Australia.

Vicki Cardwell is married and has two children. Son Josh is also a former professional squash, daughter Sarah Cardwell is still active as a professional.
