Victor Maistriau

Victor Eugène Jules In Maistriau ( born October 5, 1870 in Maurage, Hainaut, Belgium, † January 21, 1961 in Mons, Hainaut, Belgium) was a Belgian liberal politician.

Biography

The son of a mayor of Maurage studied post-school law at the University of Ghent, where he took his doctorate in law from.

His political career began in 1903 with the election of a member of the Municipal Council of Mons, where he served 50 years until 1953. After a period as Assistant Secretary for Public Instruction 1912-1926, he was mayor of Mons in 1926 and remained in this position also until 1953.

In 1933 he was also elected a member of the House of Representatives and represented there until 1946, the interests of the Arrondissement of Mons. In 1934 he was Minister of Post, Telephone and Telegraph ( PTT) for some time.

Prime Minister Paul Van Zeeland also appointed him on 15 July 1937 the Minister of Justice in his cabinet, where he remained until the end of the term of office of Zeeland on 24 November 1937.

For his political achievements, he was awarded in addition to some other politicians on September 3, 1945 with the honorary title of Minister of State.
